Hi, my name is Samantha Kimmel. I received a Bachelors of Fine Arts in Medical Illustration at Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT). In the four years at RIT, I was able to experience hands on cadaver dissections where I learned and drew from real life. I also experienced and drew from live surgery in the operating room at the local Rochester General Hospital. Taking these life experiences, I created illustrations using techniques utilized by Medical Illustrators. As a medical illustrator my goal is to create biomedical illustrations that are accurate, produce clarity, and are eye catching. I also dabble in graphic design and illustration. Art is a passion of mine no matter what the subject matter.
My Story
I first became interested in Medical Illustration when I was in seventh grade. My science teacher, Mr. Wilcox, noticed my passion for biology and my skill in art. He suggested I consider Scientific Illustration as a career. I excitedly researched this job title. It combined the two subject that challenged my brain and made me want to learn more. I found out that not only could I study Scientific Illustration, but Medical Illustration. I chose Medical Illustration. In the following years I took Anatomy and Physiology and continued my art education through high school. I never wavered from wanting to fulfill my dream to become a Medical Illustrator. By going to RIT, I was able to have hands-on experience that a pre-med student would have on top of all of the classes an Illustrator would take. It was a thrilling time for me. I left school and dabbled in graphic design for a soap company, and moved yet again into the science realm to work for an eLearning company that designs modules for pharmaceutical trials. My goal has always been to learn and grow and I always hope to continue to do so.
